YWCA Oahu opens new Enterprising Women of Color Business Center
Sponsored by YWCA Oahu
Eliminating racism and empowering women is a huge part of YWCA Oahu’s mission. Its newest Enterprising Women of Color Business Center supports this by helping minority women-owned businesses grow right here in Hawaii.
The MBDA Enterprising Women of Color Business Center offers minority women entrepreneurs with one-on-one business and financial counseling, workshops and resources to help these business grow through business analysis and facilitating access to contracts and funding.
“We’re the newest business center at YWCA Oahu. We’re here to help minority women-owned businesses grow,” says Director Shan Wirt. “The latest data shows that there are over 44,000 women-owned businesses in Hawaii, which is about 38 percent of all Hawaii businesses. Not too bad, but the data also shows that these businesses only generate about 7 percent of all Hawaii revenue. That’s a huge discrepancy and we’re here to help change that and level the playing field.”
About 50 percent of women-owned businesses nationally are women of color. Across the country, minority women entrepreneurs are the cornerstones of economic growth in their communities. Women re-invest approximately 90 percent of their earnings into their families and communities. However, historically due to many reasons, minority women business owners have faced many challenges. That’s why YWCA Oahu’s Enterprising Women of Color Business Center is here to help.
The Business Center offers free one-on-one counseling, workshops and resources for three key prongs: Business analysis, market access, and access to capital.
This Business Center closely aligns with the mission at YWCA O’ahu of eliminating racism and empowering women. Participate today by visiting ywcaoahu.org/mbda-ewoc and completing the intake form. This way, the organization can learn about your business and figure out the best ways to help it grow.
