Wind Advisory and Gail Warning Issued for Maui County

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory and a gale warning that are in effect until 6 am Sunday for much of Hawaiʻi.

A surge of east trade winds of 20 to 35 mph are expected this afternoon with localized gusts at more than 50 mph for portions of Maui, Molokai, Kahhoolawe, Kauaʻi and Oʻahu. Winds are expected to decrease late tonight into Sunday morning, but will remain breezy.

Winds this strong are capable of downing tents or other temporary structures, as well as downing trees and causing power outages.

Motorists should use extra caution.

For boaters, east winds are expected at 20 to 35 knots with seas of 7 to 10 feet in the Kaiwi Channel, Pailolo Channel and Alenuihaha Channel. A gale warning means winds of 34 to 47 knows are imminent of occuring.

Strong winds will cause hazardous seas which could capsize or damage vessels.
