Supporting Hawaii’s local restaurants is more important than ever, and now you have even more of an inside scoop on the industry with a new show: Where Hawaii Eats presented by the Honolulu Star Advertiser’s Dining Out. HI Now host Kanoe Gibson caught up with the show’s host Anne Lee to learn more about the show.
“About three years ago, I was asked to be the face of Dining Out and make some changes to the layout, give the section an updated look and bridge the gap from print and digital,” Lee explains.
During the show, Lee will be interviewing local chefs, restauranteurs, and people in the community that have a connection to food.
“The title is Where Hawaii Eats, so I want to bring that out with each of my guests,” she adds. “Believe it or not, I am not a chef, but love to dine out. I also worked in the restaurant industry growing up, where I did everything but work in the back of the house. I can speak the language to restaurants as I worked in these positions before.”
The first episode will have an interview with Chef Alan Wong who will touch on why he closed. There will also be interviews with Chef Jon Matsubara and Chef Matt Young from Duke’s Waikiki.
Now with the vaccine available to the hospitality and essential workers, there will be more people comfortable going out to restaurants. Lee hopes this show will help remind people to support the restaurant community, whether it’s dine in or take out.
“We have to support the local restaurants. Without them, it’s gonna affect everything,” Lee says.
Where Hawaii Eats will premiere on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at 8 p.m. on K5 and again on KHNL. Be sure to check your local listings for times.
