Westfields Sports to feature in documentary

Lights, camera, footy: Follow the highs and lows of the Westfields Sports High School 2017 NRL Schoolboy Cup campaign in a five-part documentary titled The Season 2.

Future rugby league stars of Westfields Sports High School are about to be stars of the small screen.

Onion TV Productions have produced a five-part documentary on the school’s 2017 defence of their NRL Schoolboy Cup crown titled The Season 2.

From fitness testing and training sessions to the classroom and game days, the crew followed the Fairfield West school’s journey to claim consecutive national titles. History will show the Westfields lost to Keebra Park State High School in the national final 25-12. What you didn’t see was the behind-the-scenes struggles of balancing sport and school for the players.

In a teaser video released, it shows coach Wayne Lambkin addressing the students before a game.

“Your’re just lucky enough that you’re dedicated and good young men that can look forward and go you know what, I can focus on something. I can make something of my life,” says Lambkin in an inspiring speech that forms the core of the documentary.

It’s not just about rugby league. It’s about of a journey of athletic growth, personal development and sporting opportunity.

Onion TV director/producer Nick Piper wrote in his description of the documentary that The Season 2 focuses on the relationships between coaching staff, family and students as much as the on-field battles.

“As interesting as the players – with their assorted ambitions and desperate backstories are, the real colour and grit comes from the coaches, teachers and administrators tasked with maintaining the demanding high-wire act between sport and academia,” he wrote.

One of the players Tommy Talau said it was a “unique experience” to be followed by a camera crew throughout the season.

Talau, a Canterbury Bulldogs junior, is one of four Westfields players that have been selected for the NSW under-18 team. He will be joined by Matthew Doorey, Jason Saab and Stefano Utoikamanu in the blues line-up to take on Queensland at the MCG.

Westfields started their 2018 NRL Schoolboy Cup campaign in emphatic style last week defeating Endeavour Sports High School 60-4.

  • The Season 2 premiers on Fox Sports on June 30. The series will be continue every Saturday throughout July. The documentary was officially launched on Thursday.
