VCA Hawaii shares tips to keep pets at ease ahead of New Year’s Eve

It’s the holiday season, and you know what that means — lots of fireworks, especially for the New Year! HI Now host Kainoa Carlson met up with Dr. Lydia Lam with VCA Hawaii to learn some tips on keeping pets safe and calm during end of the year festivities.

For those with pet cats, Dr. Lam says they are just as affected by fireworks as dogs. She explains that these animals can actually get a lot more stressed during New Year’s Eve. Since they aren’t as open with their discomfort, people aren’t always aware of what their cat is experiencing.

Dr. Lam suggests that extra hiding places may help cats better cope with all the noise. She also recommends keeping animals inside with windows and doors closed to avoid the flashing lights. You can also turn on the TV or radio so that the noise helps to drown out the sound of the fireworks. She also notes that it’s important to never leave pets chained up outside alone.

About Dr. Lam

Dr. Lam grew up in Singapore, and moved to the United States to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. She graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California, Davis in 2011. She later completed a one-year internship at the University of Florida, focusing on small animal medicine, surgery, and emergency with electives in exotic and zoo animal medicine.

Dr. Lam worked in Kaneohe, Hawaii, and Reno, Nevada, before joining the VCA Family team in Pearl City.
