Tropicana Atlantic City kicks off sports betting

ATLANTIC CITY — Tropicana became the seventh casino to offer on-site sports betting Thursday morning.

The sports book, run by William Hill US, is a temporary location until a 5,000-square-foot permanent structure is complete, said Steve Callender, general manager of Tropicana Atlantic City.

Callender said there is no timeline for when the permanent book will open.

“I think (sports betting) is great for Atlantic City because it brings new people to town,” said Callender.

The sports book — located directly across from Chickie’s and Pete’s Crab House and Sports Bar — does not have lounge seating or the usual wall of television screens. Rather, Callender said, Tropicana’s other offerings, such as Chickie’s, A Dam Good Sports Bar, Hooters and Ri Ra Irish Pub, can fill the void until the final sports book is completed.

Tropicana’s sports book is the third location in New Jersey under William Hill US, the other two being Monmouth Park Racetrack and Ocean Resort Casino. Michael Grodsky, vice president of marketing and public relations for William Hill, said the operator’s partnership with Tropicana, and parent company El Dorado Resorts, made sense.

“It’s always exciting when a new sports book opens up somewhere, and this one is extra special with the location and the history of this building,” Grodsky said.

The first bet placed at Tropicana was by Atlantic City resident Victor Groynom, 68, who put $20 on the Los Angeles Lakers. Groynom, who described himself as a collector of casino memorabilia, said he won’t cash the ticket even if it’s a winner.

“I’m going to frame this one,” he said.

Tropicana joins Bally’s Wild Wild West Casino, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, Golden Nugget, Harrah’s Resort, Ocean Resort and Resorts Casino Hotel in offering on-site sports betting.

New Jersey started offering sports betting at Atlantic City casinos and two racetracks in June. Through September, the operators have generated more than $44 million in sports betting revenue.
