“When you think about Merrie Monarch, you think about all the good ono food,” said Tammy Smith, the dietary manager at Lunalilo Home. “When you’re going to Hilo, you have all your favorite places to go, and that’s what we get to bring to our people as they’re watching Merrie Monarch.”
Smith will prepare three different meals for each night of Merrie Monarch. On the first night, she is serving luau stew, beef stew and tripe stew, as well as poi, ho’i’o salad, and pineapple upside-down cake. The second night, you can enjoy fried fish with kalo poke. Besides the individual plates, there will also be packages available for purchase.
“The reason to [participate] is because you will help us continue to serve and care for the residents here at Lunalilo Home,” said Lunalilo’s Director of Nursing, Dr. Poki’i Balaz. “Your kokua helps us to continue to perpetuate the legacy of King William Charles Lunalilo, and his intent was for us to protect and serve our kupuna.”
Lunalilo Home provided over 200,000 meals to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, including to local kupuna. It sources from local farms and values caring for its kupuna to honor the legacy of King Lunalilo.
