Stanton Street Sports – Summer ’18 – In stock soon @ 5 Pointz.
Stanton Street Sports, as you may know, comes from the same fold as Only NY, a favourite brand of ours a few years ago. It’s graphic style, colour choices and quality of fabrics and construction is all similar to it’s older sibling brand. There is more emphasis on sports, as you may expect, but you can tell it is the same creative heads behind both ventures. Even the name is linked, as Stanton Street is the address of the Only NY flagship store in the Lower East Side, New York. This location, in the heart of this infamous district of the culturally world-leading city, is key to the brands style.
The Lower East Side has always been a cultural melting pot as it became the home of immigrants from all over the world at the beginning of the 20th century. Although poverty was rife in its signature tenement blocks, it was also a creative hub, producing entertainment giants such the Marx Brothers and Irving Berlin. Although the area has gone through rough periods with high levels of crime, it has always attracted artists, musicians and creatives of all kinds.
With the 21st century gentrification of the area it now one of the most desirable districts to live in for young up and comers with a thriving restaurant and bar scene, and numerous small, stylish boutiques, such as the Only NY store on Stanton Street. The rich and varied cultural history of the district, and NYC as a whole, gives Stanton Street Sports a endless source of inspiration. As there output is always print oriented, they focus mainly on the changing graphics styles that have adorned the streets over the decades. The clean, simple typefaces that are there mainstay always give the clear message that these boys are from New York.
This new collection for the Summer 2018 season sticks to this winning method. The ‘Garden’ tee perfectly replicates the graphics of the hundreds of restaurants in nearby China Town. The ‘Peace’ tee with it’s delicate CND logo print is a definite nod to the beatnik and hippy culture that so permeated the Lower East Side in the 1950’s and 60’s. These pieces and more will be in stock soon online and in-store at 5 Pointz.
