Special Thanksgiving sale at Rusty’s Hawaiian

In 1998, Rusty and Lorie Obra stood on the southern slope of Mauna Loa, following a friend who took them around a fledgling coffee farm. Without saying a word to each other, they locked eyes and knew their next move: Rusty would take an early-retirement offer and Lorie would quit her job. They would leave New Jersey to become Ka‘u coffee farmers –even though neither of them had any farming experience. At that time, they didn’t even drink coffee!
The couple joined former sugar-mill workers in transforming abandoned sugar plantations. Collectively, they hoped to turn the Ka‘u District into Hawaii’s next big coffee-growing region. They had no idea how hard it would be. Rusty encouraged his fellow farmers to keep going despite the odds. But by the time he died in 2006, Ka‘u still was largely unknown.
Lorie was undeterred. After her husband’s death, she devoted his namesake farm, mill and roastery to artisanal quality. Rusty’s Hawaiian’s beans have earned multiple high scores in Coffee Review: The World’s Leading Coffee Guide. They also twice won Grand Champion of the Hawaii Coffee Association’s statewide competition. In 2018, Forbes magazine named Rusty’s Hawaiian one of the 12 best coffee roasters in the United States.
