The 2021 Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club is the PGA TOUR’s first full-field event of the new year with 144 of the world’s top golf professionals competing for a share of the $6.6 million prize. The 2021 champion will take home a check for $1,188,000 after Sunday’s final round on January 17. The third longest running event in PGA TOUR history and Hawaii’s largest charity sporting event, this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii will be played without spectators in attendance. Golf fans can watch the tournament on Golf Channel’s live TV broadcast Thursday-Sunday, January 14-17.
The Sony Open in Hawaii is the largest charity sporting events in the state showcasing the “Strength of our Giving” when individuals, businesses and the community work together. Last year tournament host Friends of Hawaii Charities distributed $1.2 million in grants from proceeds raised at the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii and with support from long-time charity partner, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, which matches funds raised at tournament dollar-for-dollar; from title sponsor Sony Corporation, host site Waialae Country Club, and state sponsor Hawaii Tourism Authority. Since the inaugural Sony Open in Hawaii in 1999, the tournament has raised a total of over $20 million dollars for local charities.
Friends of Hawaii Charities aims to raise $1.2 million again this year to benefit local charities. Fans can help give their favorite participating charities a bonus boost through the annual Aloha for Hawaii Charities campaign which is live now through January 20. When you donate to your favorite participating charity through Aloha for Hawaii Charities, that charity receives 100 percent of your donation plus a bonus boost from a funding pool generated by Friends of Hawaii Charities from Sony Open in Hawaii tournament proceeds.
The 2021 field is shaping up to be a very exciting one with seven past champions including the Sony Open’s first back-to-back 2003/2004 champion Ernie Els, Ryan Palmer, Vijay Singh, Pat Kizzire, Johnson Wagner, Fabien Gomez and Jerry Kelly. Jerry Kelly and Rory Sabbatini have competed in every Sony Open since 1999 and are scheduled to appear in 2021.
