Shriners Hospitals for Children provides services for all keiki

Sponsored by Shriners Hospitals for Children – Honolulu

According to Dr. Ono, Shrines Hospitals is misunderstood by the general public. Shriners is a full-service subspecialty hospital that cares for children with orthopedic conditions like injuries, or bone, joint, or spine conditions. They also care for children with common musculoskeletal problems and acquired problems like fractures. “It’s the breath of services we provide. Even though I’m a pediatric surgeon, it’s not just surgery. About two thirds of the work I do is taking care of kids outside of the operating room,” he says.

Shriners Hospitals is a state-of-the-art facility focused around the keiki. It’s a unique hospital due to the warm friendly staff and the kid-friendly interior design. “When they come see us, it’s sort of like play,” says Dr. Ono. In addition to the inviting atmosphere, Shriners offers on-premises physical therapy, recreational therapy, an indoor therapy pool, in-house prosthetic and orthotics lab, and a X-ray system the exposes children to a fraction of the radiation while maintaining high-quality, accurate imaging.

Lexie K. initially became a patient at Shriners due to scoliosis. She says the doctors were very helpful in guiding her during her treatment. Since then, she’s been very active, participating in cheerleading, making Tik Tok videos, and baking! “They give me all these opportunities, like, now I get to be a scoliosis ambassador there, and I did a speech there. I’m getting really involved with them and it’s really nice,” says Lexie.

Shriners Hospitals for Children always provides care regardless of insurance or a family’s ability to pay. You do not need a referral to receive care, and all keiki are welcome! They also provide 24/7 keiki injury care that can be received in person, via telehealth, or by phone. For more information, please visit, or follow them on Facebook and Instagram @shrinershon!
