Shane Robinson Art Gallery Wailea Opens in the Andaz Maui – Shane Robinson

On Friday, January 10, 2013, we opened our new art gallery in Wailea at the Andaz Maui. This unique collaboration – and gallery that is open 24 hours daily – came forward as a result of the commission from the Andaz last summer. This art is contemporary abstract photography with Hawaiian subject matter, all created on the Andaz property.

There are 60 images in the Andaz Series 1, with a full range of color: pinks and purples in the Ti series; greens and lavender in the Plumeria Series; gold, caramel and browns in the Stair and Kaʻana Series; and blues and greens in the Pool and Palm Series.

The evening began with the first Andaz Salon, a private reception hosted by the hotel in the Solarium. After a bit of mingling, Kainoa Horcajo, Hawaiian Cultural Director at the Andaz, brought everyone’s attention to the stage, welcomed the invited guests, and played a short video the Bui Brothers had shot and edited just the day before. It was the first time I had seen the video and I am so delighted and thrilled with what they produced! Kainoa then invited me to the stage and we had a wonderful conversation for about 30 minutes, talking about the work and my process.

Following the Salon conversation, our friends joined us in the gallery where Kahu Lyons Naone conducted the most beautiful Hawaiian Blessing I have ever witnessed. And with that, we officially opened the Shane Robinson Fine Art Gallery at the Andaz Maui at Wailea resort.

Our heart-felt gratitude and thanks go out to Michael Stephens, General Manager of the Andaz Maui, Kainoa Horcajo, Bridget Hinman and Frank Robinson (without whom we could not have produced the event), our friends and collectors from Maui, Oahu, L.A., Sweden, and Canada who shared the evening with us. We are also so grateful to the Andaz staff for their warm hospitality – we look forward to working together!

This is a modest beginning. We see this as simply “Phase One” of a much more extensive build out, both in terms of the physical gallery space as well as how the work in the gallery is experienced and interacts with the guests and events. I will be at the hotel each week creating special “art gallery Wailea” events, interacting with guests and introducing them to many of our Maui artists. Please join my email list so I can let you know about these and other events at the Gallery and at the Andaz!
