Ray Sanborn was a pillar in the sailing community and in the childcare community, and his legacy lives on today through Kama`aina Kids and the Ray Sanborn Youth Sailing Scholarship Fund.
“Anyone that knew him knows that his two passions were sailing and providing quality childcare for the families of Hawaii,” says Jesse Andrews, a youth sailing coach with Kama`aina Kids. “What better way to honor his legacy than by raising money for kids to be able to explore their passion for sailing.”
Andrews says that the former Kama`aina Kids president was an avid sailor and a staple at the yacht club.
“He was all about providing childcare, recreational opportunities, and getting kids out on the water,” he adds. “Everyone has been really generous about donating to the fund.”
There will be a limited number of scholarships available every year to kids in need.
“It’s gonna last for years. Anyone’s eligible for it, I know time’s are tough these days,” Andrews adds. “Sailing does cost money, so it’s great to have this fund to help out.”
Sailing provides keiki the opportunity to be out on the water, being resourceful, and the freedom of being in control of a boat no matter their age. Andrews says it’s so much better than sitting around and staying at home.
“We are working out the logistics of awarding the scholarships, but there will be an application process announced soon with all the details so stay tuned!” he says.
The plan is to continue to raise money year-round so that scholarships will be available every year to a handful of kids starting Summer 2021. For more information, contact the Kaneohe Yacht Club at (808) 247-4121. To donate to the Scholarship Fund, visit kamaainakids.com
