Update: (2:11 p.m., May 26, 2023)

An early morning structure fire at a Kahului restaurant resulted in $440,000 in damage, Friday. 

The fire was first reported at 1:51 a.m. on May 26, 2023 at the new Rey’s Place restaurant, located at 70 Lono Ave.  

Many know the building as the former site of the Dairy Queen, Treats & Sweets and Plantation Grindz.  The new restaurant just announced its opening less than a month ago after months of preparation. 

Fire crews arrived on scene to find the structure more than 70% involved.  

The fire was brought under control at 2:32 a.m., and was extinguished at 4:06 a.m.

Crews responding to the scene included personnel from Engine 10, Engine 1, Rescue 10 and Hazmat 10.

Fire officials say damages included $232,000 to the structure, $175,000 to its contents, and $33,000 to a vehicle parked nearby.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire investigators and police remain on the scene of a structure fire reported overnight in Kahului.

The fire occurred at Rey’s Place (the former Plantation Grindz and Dairy Queen) restaurant building located at 70 Lono Ave. in Kahului. Rey’s Place had just opened less than a month ago on April 29, 2023.

At 7:47 a.m., police reopened Lono Ave. between West Kamehameha and Kaʻahumanu Ave. Surrounding streets were closed at around 2:30 a.m.

Maui police have implemented multiple road closures due to an early morning structure fire in Kahului. West Kamehameha Ave. is closed between Kaulawahine Street and School Street; and Lono Ave. is closed between West Kamehameha Ave. and Kaʻahumanu Ave. due to a structure fire.

The road closures were first implemented at around 2:30 a.m.
