The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui is seeking nominations for Maui individuals who have demonstrated grit and resilience during the 2020 pandemic, through their leadership and for being an inspiration to the community. The Resilience Award was created to recognize and honor those who have gone beyond their own capacity or job to give back and inspire others to do the same.
Nominees of all ages are welcome and are not required to be of Japanese descent. Additional information, which includes the nomination form, is available on jcsmaui.org.
“This pandemic has tested our ability to withstand the unbearable, yet there are those who have led initiatives beyond what is expected of them, which have brought life-saving positive impact to our community,” said Deron Furukawa, president of JCSM. “Please help us identify these individuals so we can properly honor and thank them for their efforts and to help share their stories.”
Awardees shall be recognized at JCSM’s annual Shinnen Enkai celebration, which will be held virtually via Zoom on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021. Registration is free and the event will be streamed online via the JCSM Facebook page. Sponsorship opportunities are available and funds raised from the event will go towards JCSM’s Scholarship Program.
JCSM’s annual Oshougatsu Mochi-Pounding event and the Nihon Bunka Awards are postponed due to the pandemic to allow for the Resilience Awards in 2021. Email jcsmhawaii@gmail.com for any questions.
