The Government Relations, Ethics and Transparency Committee is seeking applications for the new Commission on Healing Solutions for Homelessness, Chair Mike Molina announced today. The deadline to apply is by noon on Feb. 19, 2021

The commission was created last year by Ordinance 5117. Molina said his committee is especially encouraging members of the community who are actively working on or advocating for issues related to homelessness to consider applying for the new commission.

“Our hope is to attract key stakeholders who can significantly contribute in the fight against homelessness and are dedicated to working collaboratively to seek solutions for Maui County,” he said.

The commission will have 11 members, two appointed by the mayor and nine by the council—one from each councilmember residency area.

Molina said the application procedures are as follows:

Potential applicants should review membership criteria and download the application form at https://www.mauicounty.gov/2431/.

  • Applications can be submitted via email to great.committee@mauicounty.us, referencing GREAT-15.
  • Applications can also be mailed, faxed or dropped off in a drop box located outside the main entrance to the Kalana O Maui Building or submitted to the council’s district office in Hāna, Lahaina, Lānaʻi City and Kaunakakai.
  • Councilmembers will be given access to all applications received by the deadline.
  • Page 1 of each application will be made available to the public.
  • Each councilmember will make a nomination to the commission by  Feb. 23.
  • At its March 2 meeting, the committee will review a resolution that will include the councilmembers’ nine nominees and the names of others in the pool of applicants. If any nominee fails to get a majority vote, a councilmember may make another nomination at the meeting.
  • The committee’s recommendations will be taken up at the March 19 council meeting.

For more information on applying for a volunteer position with the Commission on Healing Solutions for Homelessness, contact committee staff at (808) 270-7134 or (808) 270-8039.

Members of the public can view the March 2 committee meeting on Akakū Channel 53 or provide testimony via the video conference link or phone number listed on the meeting agenda. For more information on upcoming meeting agendas, visit MauiCounty.us/agendas.

In addition to receiving testimony by phone or video conference, the council will accept written testimony.
