The game went down to the wire Friday night.

Rye Garnet football ended its season in a dramatic 14-21 loss to John Jay.

“MAHOPAC – As his teammates rushed to celebrate around him, Bryce Ford slouched and held his hands up, asking them to give him a minute.

He was as sore as he was soaked and soon the John Jay-Cross River senior would even start shivering. Although Ford couldn’t join the dogpile he seemed so responsible for, he enjoyed it nonetheless.

“Physically, I”m a little down, but I’m on an emotional high right now,” Ford said. “This was a grudge match. Look at the weather outside. We grinded. I’ve never played a game like this in my life, but I’d come back and do it again any day.”

The Indians and their star quarterback were glad to survive on a miserable Friday night at Mahopac High School. They made one final stop in a downpour when Ford intercepted a pass with three seconds remaining to cap John Jay’s 21-14 win over Rye in the Section 1 Class A championship.

The tireless Ford either ran or threw on 67 plays and came up with two interceptions in the fourth quarter. The last completed a goal-line stand with the Garnets threatening at the Indians’ 4…

Rye, which trailed 21-0 at one point in the first half, scored twice in the second quarter as the rain intensified. The second half proved to be a scoreless slog, but the Garnets were forced to stop John Jay on downs three times in their territory, once at the 1.

On the final drive, Rye drove 78 yards before the offense was stopped a few yards short.

“We had some open people early in the game that we missed, but then we came back,” coach Dino Garr said. “I’m proud of our kids. They’re a great team that won, but we’re also a great team.””
