The County of Maui Department of Planning will host a virtual workshop on proposed Special Management Area and Shoreline Rule amendments that could affect properties near the shoreline on the island of Maui.

The workshop will be part of the Maui Planning Commission’s regular meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 9 am via BlueJeans. The meeting link can be found at: https://maui.bluejeans.com/957104845.

The meeting agenda is posted at: https://www.mauicounty.gov/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/27911.

The proposed rules are intended to streamline the regular and emergency Special Management Area and shoreline permitting processes and ensure that new development is out of harm’s way by accounting for changing shoreline conditions from sea level rise. The proposal also includes codifying minor actions that can be categorically exempt and no longer require assessment applications.

Throughout 2019, the department conducted meetings to gather community feedback on the proposed rules. However, the COVID-19 pandemic put a hold on further progress in 2020. The workshop will continue the process so that the proposed rule amendments may be considered for adoption by the Planning Commission by spring 2021.

The proposed rule amendments and presentations from 2019 are available online at www.mauicounty.gov/planning under the “Hot Topics” section. Property owners may also ask questions by sending email to planning@mauicounty.gov.
