Longtime Shinnyo Lantern Floating participant takes time to create hope for others

Sponsored by Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii

The Shinnyo Lantern Floating ceremony is a powerful event that wows people across the world, but it couldn’t be done without volunteers who take the time to create hope for others. HI Now host Kanoe Gibson caught up with Rob Lee who has been participating in the event for years.

This year, the Shinnyo Lantern Floating ceremony will be held virtually during “Share Your Light – A Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi Special,” premiering Memorial Day, May 31, 2021, at 6:30 on KGMB.

While the lantern ceremony will not be taking place this year at Ala Moana Beach park, Shinnyo-en has also created an interactive experience for the public to engage in. Many Rivers, One Ocean: An Interactive Experience will be held on the grounds of Shinnyo-en Hawaii. A large-scale lantern, designed by artist Hide Tsutsui, will be a space for reflection and remembrance. This lantern will be adorned with a silhouette of a kukui tree known as a symbol of light, hope and renewal. In addition, a four-paneled mural illustrating growth, connection and hope will be created by artist Boz Schurr and students from Kamehameha Schools. Participants will have the opportunity to write and hang messages of remembrance and commitments to positive action on the trees within the art installation.

Don’t miss the 30-minute television broadcast Share Your Light – A Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi Special on Memorial Day, May 31 at 6:30 p.m. on KGMB. The special will also be simultaneously streamed at lanternfloatinghawaii.com and on Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi Facebook page and Instagram accounts.
