It’s an unfortunate reality – scammers are constantly trying to find new ways to trick you into divulging personal information, especially when you’re online. This week is International Fraud Awareness Week, and with the holidays fast approaching, it’s a good time to get educated on identifying potential fraud risks. Our friends at Hawaii State FCU have some tips on avoiding online scams and becoming a victim of fraud.

International Fraud Awareness Week is a global effort to promote anti-fraud awareness and education. During the holidays especially, scammers know that more consumers will be shopping and online, and they try to exploit that by finding new ways to try to steal our personal information. According to the Federal Trade Commission, Hawaii reported more than 10,000 complaints of fraud last year, including identity theft, online scams and fake sweepstakes scams. That’s why Hawaii State FCU feels it’s important that everyone to be able to identify ways that they can things they can do to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

Be on the alert for shipping notification scams and fake check scams. And don’t click on links on emails, be cautious when purchasing gift cards, and always check your financial accounts for suspicious activity.
