For anyone who has ever wanted to learn ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i, now is the perfect time to do so. With a new online Hawaiian language program, Ka Hale Hoaka offers three different courses that you can take from the comfort of your own home.
Ka Hale Hoaka’s new ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i Program is taught by co-founder Maile Naehu (“Kumu Maile”), a Native Hawaiian educator, performer, artist, and community organizer from the island of Molokaʻi.
“We started offering cultural immersion to keiki during the pandemic, and now, we are pleased to announce a new ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i program, designed for adults,” Naehu says.
She explains that the classes are perfect for any adults who want to learn beginner-level Hawaiian language.
“We welcome people of all backgrounds and geographical locations and offer a mix of live classes and pre-recorded sessions to learn at the pace and format you’re comfortable with,” she adds.
The ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i Program offers three learning paths. For $99, you can try the Weekend Crash Course. Spend a Friday evening and Saturday with Kumu Maile and enjoy four hours of live course instruction. Or there’s the Papa Makua course for $127 where you can enjoy 12 pre-recorded sessions with Kumu Maile and learn at your own pace. Finally, there’s the Hui Makua course for $300. Experience a 12-week live course with Kumu Maile. In addition to Hawaiian language, explore a deeper dive into Hawaiian culture by learning oli (chanting), mele (song), hula, and mo’olelo (storytelling). Each weekly course is 45 minutes long.
“After growing up not completely connected to my Hawaiian culture, I had a strong pull to build an understanding of my cultural identity right after high school,” Naehu explains. “In college, I immersed myself into Hawaiian studies, and made learning and educating others about Hawaiian culture my life’s work. I’m thrilled to have this ability through Ka Hale Hoaka to share my knowledge with anyone in Hawaiʻi and around the globe who is interested in learning.”
