Join Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation for their 47th anniversary fundraiser
Sponsored by Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation
The Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation (NHLC) has been the only non-profit law firm dedicated exclusively to advancing the rights of Native Hawaiians for the past 47 years. “What that means is every day, every case, every service is dedicated to cultural identity, to strengthening that, to preserving natural resources that we’ve stored and malama, and to ensuring that there is cultural legacy for future generations,” says Summer Lee Haunani Sylvia, Executive Director of NHLC. They focus on servicing the more vulnerable individuals in Hawaii such as the indigent or houseless.
Now is your chance to offer your kokua for the NHLC, as they celebrate their 47th anniversary with a televised fundraiser. The one-hour program will be hosted at the ‘Iolani Palace and feature the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation’s work throughout the decades. “We normally have in person fundraisers. We tried this out, it’s a way to tell our story and share the story of both our clients and the people who advocated and worked with the organization over the decades,” says Summer. NHLC hopes that people will be reminded that Native Hawaiian rights and protection of the Native Hawaiian community is a benefit for everyone and gives Hawaii its unique identity. “There’s a lot of things that we as Native Hawaiians would not have without the work of Native Hawaiian Legal Corp.,” says Angela Correa-Pei, board member of NHLC.
The show will air on August 29th at 8 pm on KHNL, August 30th at 8 pm on K5, and September 4th at 6 pm on KGMB with special appearances from legendary musician and board member Keali’i Reichel, Melody Kapilialoha Mackenzie, and other vital community advocates. NLHC has also partnered with the Council of Native Hawaiian Advancement, who will be matching any donation up to $20,000 dollar for dollar.
