Hundreds of keiki between the ages of 5 and 11 received their first dose of the recently approved Pfizer vaccine from Hawai‘i Pacific Health.

The not-for-profit health care system is now preparing for the largest vaccination effort to date for this age group with Keiki Vax Squad Drive Through events planned at designated sites on O‘ahu and Kaua‘i. The health care system reports that this will provide a convenient opportunity for keiki to get shots from the comfort of their parent’s car.

Emergency Use Authorization was granted by the FDA last week for the pediatric doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and the CDC earlier this week gave approval to certified providers for administration of the vaccine to kids ages 5-11.

Hawai‘i Pacific Health became the first certified vaccination provider in the State of Hawai‘i to administer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for this age group on Wednesday, Nov. 3. In the first two days, HPH administered 603 vaccinations for 5-11 year olds through its combined efforts at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children’s COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic and Straub Medical Center’s COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic on O‘ahu, as well as the Wilcox Medical Center’s COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic on Kaua‘i.

“Since offering the pediatric vaccines, the public response has been very positive with more than 1,500 appointments scheduled in just the first five hours that HPH’s online appointment system was available,” according to Hawai‘i Pacific Health.

HPH’s online appointment system for COVID-19 vaccines allows parents and legal guardians to schedule appointments for children ages 5-11. This will be the same process for two weekend vaccination initiatives at Aloha Stadium and Kapolei High School. Thousands of these online appointments are now available and offer options for parents on O‘ahu, who can have multiple children in their vehicle eligible for the vaccination.

  • The HPH Keiki Vax Squad Drive-Through events on O‘ahu begin next weekend. The first event will be at Aloha Stadium on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 13 and 14 (second-dose days will be on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4 and 5)
  • The second event will be at Kapolei High School on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 20 and 21 (second-dose days will be on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 11 and 12). There will be more information next week on the drive-through process and what parents can expect.

HPH is also bringing the vaccination effort directly to communities on O‘ahu. Starting tomorrow, vaccines for children ages 5-11 will be available at HPH mobile vaccine clinic locations on O‘ahu with the HPH COVID-19 Vax Squad buses.

On Kaua‘i, Wilcox will offer a special clinic just for children ages 5-11:

  • Each Tuesday from Nov. 9 until Nov. 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and
  • Saturday, Nov. 13, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Its regular clinic hours on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. are for individuals ages 12 and older only.
