Experience the spirit of harmony through tradition, art, and education! Starting March 13, 2021, the Honolulu Festival will begin its virtual celebration. The festival has grown to be one of Hawaii’s most anticipated events, each year bringing together thousands from around the world. This year, you can join the celebration by watching the televised special, “Honolulu Festival: Pacific Harmony Through Cultural Exchange.”
“The Honolulu Festival started as more of a cultural exchange between Japan and Hawaii,” Honolulu Festival Spokesperson Lenny Yajima explains. “The festival wanted to bring Japanese culture to the people of Hawaii who couldn’t necessarily go to Japan and experience things like the Daijayama, the fire-breathing dragon.”
Over the years, the festival has evolved to include people from all over the Pacific region. In recent years, it’s also included people from North and South America. Eventually, the festival hopes to include Europe to make it a truly international celebration.
Yajima says the festival is really important because of its educational value — especially for keiki.
“One of the highlights of the festival for me is seeing the reaction on the keiki’s faces when they’re watching a performance. And it’s usually something they’ve never seen live before,” she says.
Yajima says “Honolulu Festival: Pacific Harmony Through Cultural Exchange” TV special is sure to give viewers the joy that the festival brings in person. There will also be interviews with kupuna that were involved from the first festival talking about the behind the scenes work that went into the event.
Be sure to watch “Honolulu Festival: Pacific Harmony Through Cultural Exchange” premiering on March 13 at 7 p.m. on K5 and streaming at the same time on HawaiiNewsNow.com. You can also watch encore airings on March 14 at 8 p.m. on KHNL and March 19 at 7 p.m. on KGMB.
