Kula artist Curtis Wilson Cost had a vision to bring Santa to his neighborhood this holiday season. He enlisted help from his daughter and fellow artist Julia Allisson Cost to turn his old golf cart into a red sleigh.
The father and daughter built and painted an elaborate cardboard sleigh around the golf cart. Many neighbors dropped off presents and on Dec. 23, Curtis dressed as Santa and Julia dressed as an elf. With bells jingling, they traveled to see the boys and girls and create some holiday magic.
Kids big and small were thrilled. Even rain didn’t dampen the fun. Some neighbors borrowed Santa’s sleigh to deliver gifts to friends nearby, and others donated toys to give to children along the route.
Curtis and Julia plan to make this a neighborhood tradition, with an even more elaborate golf cart sleigh next year.
They are thankful that the pandemic made them think outside the box about how to creatively spark joy for the neighborhood.
