The National Weather Service has issued wind advisories for Lānaʻi, Kahoolawe and portions of Maui and the Big Island. It also has issued high surf advisories for Maui, Molokaʻi, Oʻahu and Kauaʻi.
The wind advisory, which is in effect until 4 am Saturday, cautions for northeast to east winds of 15 to 30 mph with localized gusts more than 50 mph.
Winds this strong are capable of downing trees and causing power outages. The strongest winds will occur over ridges and through valleys where winds can accelerate downslope.
Motorists, especially those in high profile vehicles, are urged to drive with extreme caution. Avoid walking under hangin tree limbs, and be prepared for possible power outages.
The high surf advisory also is in effect until 4 am Saturday. The National Weather Service said to expect surf of 20 to 25 feet along the north facing shores of Maui and Molokaʻi. Surf of 15 to 20 feet is expected along the west facing shores of Molokaʻi and Oʻahu.
Expect ocean water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, with strong breaking waves, and strong longshore and rip currents. Breaking waves may occasionally impact harbors making navigating the harbor channel dangerous.
People should not enter waters where the conditions are dangerous.
