High School Sports Roundup: May 9

HICKORY – Bryson Hammer struck out 10 over six shutout innings and Dawson Elder was the only player to cross home in the Cougars’ 1-0 win over Sun Valley on Wednesday night in the first round of the 3A state baseball playoffs.

Hammer walked four and allowed just two hits on the mound, while Nate Moretz shut the door in the final frame to send No. 8 Alexander Central (21-7) past the No. 25 Spartans and into the second round. Jeremy Hubbard drove in Elder in the bottom of the fourth for the game’s lone score.

With the win, the Cougars will host No. 9 North Gaston at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Heading into their final at-bat facing the wrong side of an upset, the Blue Devils rallied for four runs to beat visiting Smoky Mountain 4-3.

Addyson Ikard delivered the winning hit for Maiden (20-3) in the bottom of the seventh inning. She, Grace Herman and LaShayla Thompson finished with two hits apiece, while Morgan Bohemier struck out 13 hitters from the pitcher’s circle.

The Blue Devils now advance to Friday’s second round, where they will host No. 13 Bunker Hill at 6 p.m.

3A No. 3 Alexander Central 11, No. 30 North Gaston 0

The Cougars left no doubt about Wednesday’s victor, scoring eight runs in the first inning to coast to an 11-0 run-rule victory over No. 30 North Gaston.

Julie Gast went 2-for-2 with a homer, two runs and two RBIs for Alexander Central (21-5), while Chesney Millsaps and Mattie Starnes also drove in a pair of runs. Millsaps pitched a complete game in the circle, allowing two hits and striking out six over five scoreless innings.

With the victory, the Cougars advance to the second round of the 3A state tournament, hosting No. 19 South Iredell tonight at 6 p.m.

Maiden, Newton-Conover send players to state singles

Three area athletes will compete in the 2A singles boys tennis state tournament beginning today at the Cary Tennis Park.

Defending state champion Brann Reid of Newton-Conover has been drawn against Lexington’s Andy Casados in the first round of play. Maiden’s Luke Laney will face Tyler Mills of Forest Hills, while his Blue Devils teammate, Patrick Lichtenwalner, begins his state tournament against Salisbury’s Jandor Rodas-Palacios. Play starts at 9 a.m. for the single-elimination tournament.


Area athletes look to punch state ticket

A multitude of local male and female track and field athletes will look to punch their ticket to the state championship this weekend as Regional action gets underway.

The 2A West Regional will be held at Bunker Hill on Saturday. Along with the host Bears, athletes from Newton-Conover, Fred T. Foard, Maiden, Hibriten, East Burke and Bandys will all be competing.

Watauga hosts the 3A West Regional on Saturday, with athletes from Hickory, St. Stephens, Alexander Central and West Caldwell all in the mix.

Qualifiers will advance to the state championship next weekend on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
