High school sports roundup: James Monroe slips past Chancellor

James Monroe goalie Corbin Poyer saved three of five of Chancellor shootout strokes to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 2–1 Battlefield District field hockey victory over visiting Chancellor Tuesday.

JM’s Zoe Tierney and Chancellor’s Ella Newman scored regulation goals. Winnie Hall, Caroline Wack and April Kim scored against Chancellor goalie Brittany Anderson in the shootout for the Yellow Jackets. Kylee Tuebner (who assisted on Newman’s goal) and Emma Bernard scored for the Chargers.

MASSAPONAX 5, NORTH STAFFORD 2

Emily Catlett’s two goals and one assist lifted the Panthers to a Commonwealth District win.

Taryn Saunders opened the scoring, while Grace Pietro along with Carolyne Harold added one goal apiece for Massaponax. Saunders, Catlett and Pietro all finished with one assist each, and goalie Shelby Weedon tallied eight saves.

Both North Stafford goals were scored by Grace Williams.

FREDERICKSBURG CHRISTIAN SCHOOL 6, WAKEFIELD 0

Grayson Scott registered four goals and an assist to help visiting Fredericksburg Christian bring home a win. Alaina Webb added the other two scoredsfor the Eagles.

NORTH STAFFORD 3, MASSAPONAX 2

Victoria Barrett totaled 26 kills, and Sydney Ferguson supplied 15 kills, five aces and 14 digs to help North Stafford notch a 23–25, 25–23, 16–25, 25–16, 15–10 Commonwealth District win.

Aubrey Lynch finished with 19 assists, while Izabelle Allen had 18 assists for the Wolverines, who visit Stafford on Thursday.

Sarah Corona recorded her 1,000th career kill, finishing with 24 on the night for Massaponax.

Jordan Patrick sparked the Panthers with 25 assists, while Mackenzie Green tallied eight kills and four blocks.

CHANCELLOR 3, JAMES MONROE 0

Rachel Margelos had 14 digs and Melody Washington 20 assists in the Chargers’ 25–17, 25–22, 25–13 Battlefield District win.

Taylor Collins added nine kills and Sierra Patterson six for Chancellor (6–8, 5–1).

Samantha Pierce had 12 assists and 11 digs for James Monroe (8–8–1, 2–4). Teagan Thompson and Ellie Myer added six kills apiece.

COLONIAL FORGE 3, RIVERBEND 0

Paityn Waller has 31 assists, 10 digs and six kills in the Eagles’ 25–16, 25–23, 25–23 Commonwealth District victory.

Emma Lazerson had eight kills and nine digs for Colonial Forge (7–2). Baylor Dunlap had five kills and Alexis Troy 13 digs for Riverbend (2–9).

KING GEORGE 3, EASTERN VIEW 0

Emma Birkitt had 34 assists and seven digs as the Foxes remained unbeaten in Battlefield District play with a 26–24, 25–15, 25–17 victory.

Stephanie Denton had eight kills and Jenah Deike and Kaiya Young added seven each for King George (7–1, 6–0). Lauren Wentzel had 18 digs.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 3, STAFFORD 1

Nalanie McBride had 24 digs and five aces, and Jianna Bautch added 15 kills in Mountain View’s 25–12, 11–25, 25–12, 2517 Commonwealth District win.

Maya Barnhill provided 11 digs, two blocks, five kills and 23 assists. Addie Harding had 13 digs to lead Stafford (1–4).

SPOTSYLVANIA 3, CAROLINE 0

Olivia Myers had eight kills and Kendall Loveless supplied 23 assists to help visit Spotsylvania (8–5, 4–3) get a 25–10, 25–10, 25–11 Battlefield District win.

TRINITY 3, FREDERICKSBURG CHRISTIAN SCHOOL 2

Allie Garrison had 22 digs and Erin Jones six blocks for Fredericksburg Christian, but visiting Trinity Christian escaped with a 17–25, 25–18, 25–23, 16–25, 15–9 victory.

Emma Shaeffer amassed 31 assists, while Paige Bachman contributed seven kills and three blocks for the Eagles (11–6).

WASHINGTON & LEE 3, COLONIAL BEACH 0

Karlie Jones had six digs and three kills for Colonial Beach (5–0, 1–4) in its 25–17, 25–17, 25–15 Northern Neck District loss to visiting Washington & Lee.

Spotsylvania’s Rachel Detore carded a 78 and James Monroe’s Noah Adams an 82 at Tuesday’s Region 3B Championship held at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club to qualify as individuals in the Class 3 State Championship.

The state tournament will be played next week at Williamsburg National Golf Club.

Detore finished in fifth place, nine strokes behind overall winner Isabel Bae from Brentsville.

Massaponax’s Noah LeFleur shot a 79 and Mountain View’s Andrew Watson an 82 to earn spots in next week’s Class 5 state tournament.

Albemarle won the overall title behind individual champion Jack Burns who shot a 76 on the par-72 course at Roanoke Country Club.
