KGEFCU is a non-profit credit union originally founded by government employees on Kauai, specifically police officers. In 1947, police officers were forced to purchase their own work vehicles, but no one provided them with an auto loan. They decided to bring their money together and created KGEFCU.
As a locally owned and operated credit union, KGEFCU encourages locals to keep their money here in the state. “Our money stays locally. It’s not getting invested offshore or going into the pocket of a CEO. It’s being reinvested into our community in like minded partnerships,” says Ivory Kealani Lloyd, COVID Recovery Manager at KGEFCU.
KGEFCU is considered a Community Development Financial Institution, which means that they have access to funds to build up the community. Programs like CRUA, a rent and relief program made to assist households affected by the Corona Virus, accomplishes KGEFCU’s mission of increasing the social fabric of the community.
You don’t have to be a government worker to join KGEFCU. Anyone can be eligible for membership with the credit union! Right now, they are celebrating their one-year anniversary of being the first credit union on Kauai’s north shore. Throughout September, all new members get $25!
