If you’re looking to inject a little culture into your week, the inaugural Hawaiʻi Contemporary Art Summit will run February 10-13. The virtual event series culminates with Ohana Day on February 13 and will feature virtual events for families, keiki, and young adults exploring contemporary art and ideas.
Hawai’i Contemporary and Hawai’i State Art Museum are the co-presenters of the inaugural summit. The multi-day event will bring together renowned keynote speakers, artists, curators, and thinkers from Hawai’i and around the world for educational programming focused on art and ideas. A thematic precursor to the Hawai’i Triennial 2022 (HT22), Art Summit 2021 is a series of insightful and compelling talks, performances, film screenings, and workshops that situates Hawai’i at the center of high-caliber, global discourse around contemporary art and ideas to local and international audiences.
The Hawai’i State Art Museum is proud to co-present ‘Ohana Day on February 13, a series of virtual events with something for everyone — families, children, and even young adults. The morning begins with keiki arts workshops focusing on upcycling and indigenous cultures. During lunch time, you’re invited into Mark Noguchi and Kevin Carvalho’s kitchen, where they present a family-friendly cooking demonstration that talks about the important connection between ‘āina (land), ocean, and food.
After lunch, presentations are geared toward a young adult audience where you can hear poet, artist and educator Jamaica Osario in conversation with youth leaders from the Youth Climate Strike in Hawaii and Hawaii for Black Lives. Finally, Ohana day raps up with an intergenerationally friendly musical performance that highlights many of the themes from the summit.
The Art Summit will be live streaming and then available for on-demand viewing after for a limited time. This program is free to the public, but registration is required at hawaiicontemporary.org/art-summit
