Work begins this week on repaving a driveway and a parking lot at Hanakaʻōʻō Beach Park in West Maui.
The Department of Parks and Recreation reports that the driveway and parking area on the Kāʻanapali side of the Hanakaʻōʻō Beach Park entrance are closed, but other park areas remain open to the public. Other work includes drainage improvements and construction of an ADA accessible sidewalk.
Drainage improvements will use low-impact design best management practices. These include curb cuts and catch basins to direct and intercept stormwater, perforated drain lines to allow stormwater to percolate into the ground and overflow catch basins to capture additional stormwater during heavy rains.
Park visitors can continue to use the parking lot adjacent to the restrooms and the lifeguard tower on the Lahaina town side of the entrance to the park, located off of Honoapiʻilani Highway. Additional parking is available at the Wahikuli beach parks.
Construction on the Kāʻanapali side of the park is being done in the project’s first phase. The parking lot on the Lahaina side of the park entrance will be done in a second phase. Work is being done in phases to minimize impacts on park users.
Work on the first phase is expected to completed in early February, and the second phase is targeted for completion in early April. The public is asked to stay away from construction areas as a safety precaution.
The project consultant is Otomo Engineering Inc., and the general contractor is Norrie Construction.
