The tradition of lei-giving and sharing the aloha spirit is something that truly sets Hawaii apart from the rest. And if you’ve been watching the show for a while, you may have noticed the HI Now are often wearing beautiful lei. These are actually from Heavenly Hakus on Kauai which have the Hawaii Seal of Quality! You too can place your orders
Elvrine Chow, owner of Heavenly Hakus, lives on Kauai and has been creating wili-style lei po’o since 1996. Her award-winning creations can be seen on Facebook, Instagram and of course, the Hawaii Seal of Quality website.
The State Department of Agriculture’s Hawaii Seal of Quality requires that the lei are made in the islands and that the flowers and foliage are from Hawaii. Luckily for Chow, she grows a lot of her own materials and teaches lei making on her own property — everything from gathering, to prepping to creating!
She can also be found demonstrating her art at the Kauai County Farm Bureau’s sponsored Monday Pauhana Market at Kukui Grove from 3 – 5 p.m. She also often does classes sponsored by Hawaiian Artisans at the Coconut Plantation Market Place in Wailua. Her message is: “Share, Wear, Create and Perpetuate the Art of Lei Making.”
She is also the author of the book, Heavenly Hakus Kauai, which can be purchased at various stores on Kauai and can be found in every public library in the state of Hawaii.
Chow ships her lei to the mainland via FedEx and can also deliver on Kauai. Contact Heavenly Hakus for custom orders and private classes by calling 808-634-9999. You can also email kauaiflowercrowns@gmail.com or follow on Instagram: @kauaiflowercrowns.
