Girls Summit Youth program empowers girls to be the leaders of tomorrow

Sponsored by YWCA Oahu

“Girls are empowered when they get to practice decision-making skills, creative thinking and also reflective learning,” said Colleen McAluney, the director of the Patsy T. Mink Center. “At YWCA Oahu, we believe that we have the opportunity and the responsibility to nurture all girls to become tomorrow’s leaders.”

Participants learn about yoga and mindfulness, creative reading and writing, self-defense, money management and community advocacy. They also work together on a community project which culminates at the end of the week.

“We provide the girls learning on sense of self, sense of place, inner power and creativity, all through the lens of the traditional Hawaiian values of aloha,” said McAluney. “That helps to empower them and they gain quite a bit of confidence in the weeklong program.

This year, the program will also be providing up to 75% in financial assistance to girls in need.

“What we have found out throughout the years is that it’s really important to reach all girls who are in need, regardless of their financial situation,” said Brittany Montilliano, senior manager at the Patsy T. Mink Center.
