Do not be alarmed when you don’t find “The Point After TD” special section as you open Saturday’s print or e-edition of The Tribune-Democrat, as you’ve become accustomed to doing for decades.
The high school football coverage that you expect from us isn’t going anywhere.
As the 2018 scholastic football season kicks off across the region on Friday, The Tribune-Democrat sports department will be combining its football coverage and its other sports content into a tabloid-style section named – simply and appropriately – “Saturday Sports.”
It’s not reinventing any process, it’s just putting all of our Saturday sports content into one convenient section.
The legwork put in by our reporters and correspondents every Friday night as our region’s student-athletes take to the gridiron will not change.
The same team that produced “The Opening TD” – our high school football preview, which was published on Wednesday – will bring you “Saturday Sports” on a weekly basis as summer becomes fall.
The cover will showcase a great image from one of our talented photographers, with recaps from our area’s games starting on Page 2.
Our game of the week coverage will stretch across two pages with color images, starting on Page 8.
Our Week 1 feature game will see Bishop McCort Catholic travel to Richland with sports writer Mike Mastovich providing coverage and photographer John Rucosky supplying the images from a key early-season Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference battle at Herlinger Field.
For those who can’t wait until Saturday for updates on that rivalry clash, follow Mike on Twitter @masty81.
The sports content that doesn’t appear under the high school football banner will also appear in “Saturday Sports,” including the Scoreboard Page and the television/radio listings.
As college football begins, that will mean weekly previews for Penn State, Pittsburgh and St. Francis provided by our correspondents – Vincent Lungaro at Penn State, Amanda Filipcic-Godsey at Pitt and Rob Longo at St. Francis – will be found in the new section.
Soccer, golf and other high school sports?
You’ll find it in “Saturday Sports” just like you did in our regular sports section for years.
