Congress has confirmed Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States following a violent day at the nation’s Capitol in which protestors breached the building.

The official tally of Electoral College votes was 306 votes for Biden and 232 for Trump.

Vice President Mike Pence said, “The announcement of the state of the vote by the president of the senate shall be deemed a sufficient declaration of the persons elected president and vice president of the United States, each for a term beginning on the 20th day of January, 2021. It shall be entered together with the list of the votes on the journals of the Senate and the House of Representatives.”

In an address following the incident Pence condemned the violence that occurred saying: “And we will always be grateful for the men and women who stayed at their post to defend this historic place. To those who wreaked havoc in our Capitol today, you did not win. Violence never wins. Freedom wins. And this is still the People’s House.”

The White House retweeted a statement attributed to President Donald J. Trump via a two-part Tweet by Dan Scavino, White House Director of Social Media which read:

“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th. I have always said we would continue our…

…fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!”

US Representative Kai Kahele of Hawaiʻi updated constituents in an overnight Tweet following the final certification saying: “The certificates of election of all 50 states have departed the House. The 2020 election is over. Our constitution is intact. Democracy prevailed. The Capitol is secure. @JoeBiden will be the 46th President of the United States. Good nite & god bless America.”
