Cleveland Cavaliers Draft Report Card – The Game Changer Sports Network

Posted on June 24, 2018

Updated: October 1, 2022

Over the course of the next week, I will be handing out report cards for NBA team’s recent draft selections.

The Cavaliers had a lot on their minds going through this draft process. With them being unaware of what decisions LeBron James is going to make this off-season, it made it a little more difficult to develop a game plan for this year’s draft.

If it weren’t for the Kyrie Irving trade to Boston, the Cavs wouldn’t have had a single pick in this draft. Thankfully they were able to get some value out of that trade after the other pieces of that transaction had not worked out.

With the eighth pick in the draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Alabama freshman Collin Sexton.

It’s a great selection and will most likely work out well in both scenarios whether LeBron chooses to stay or to go.

He’ll be a great ball handler and facilitator with ideal pace of play alongside James. He’ll also be able to hold his own as Cleveland starts their rebuilding process with him as the center piece.

As a freshman, the Crimson Tide point guard averaged over 19 points and three assists per game.

This pick was the first step in retaining LeBron. The “young bull” even made a pitch personally for LeBron to stay in Cleveland and get to the finals again.

Although it is a good first step, the Cavaliers still have a lot of work ahead of them in hopes of keeping their Akron native.

2018 draft report card: B+
