Chaminade launches new Doctor of Nursing Practice program

Sponsored by Chaminade University of Honolulu

A Doctor of Nursing Practice is the highest academic preparation for nursing practice, and Chaminade University offers a unique program. Not only does it meet accreditation standards, but it also focuses on social justice and ways to identify and care for vulnerable populations.

Pamela Smith, Associate Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions, says the program elevates one’s nursing practice, provides autonomy and opens doors. The program has three different tracks.

The Family Nurse Practitioner track prepares the student to become an advanced practice nurse prepared to provide comprehensive care to patients and families across the lifespan. FNPs practice in primary care settings and manage both acute and chronic conditions with a focus on disease prevention, health promotion, diagnosis, treatment, and management of care.

“Our Doctor of Nursing Practice FNP program graduates are prepared to work with patients and healthcare organizations to achieve optimal patient outcomes,” Smith explains.

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) track educates the student to become an advanced practice nurse prepared to provide psychiatric/mental health care to children, adults, and elders. PMHNPs assess, diagnose, and treat patients with mental health conditions such anxiety, depression, psychosis, bipolar manifestations, mood swings, as well as mental health maintenance. Chaminade’s Doctor of Nursing Practice PMHNP program graduates are prepared to provide holistic care for patients and communities.

The Executive Leader (EL) DNP track prepares the student with the necessary tools to implement quality improvement projects in clinics, in hospitals, and across large healthcare systems. Doctor of Nursing Practice Executive Leader program graduates will have a deep understanding of health policy, inter-professional relationships to improve patient and population health outcomes, and the ability to advocate for social justice and access to health care.

“We thread the Marianist values of quality education; family spirit; service, justice and peace; faith, and adaptation and change through the program,” Smith adds.
