Celebrate National Popcorn Day with Island Popper in Kalihi
Sponsored by Island Popper
Every year, National Popcorn Day is celebrated on January 19. This year, HI Now host Kainoa Carlson stopped by Island Popper in Kalihi to get a taste of some of its fresh popped delights.
Island Popper began in 2012 as a craving for gourmet popcorn in Hawaii. Unable to find anything to satisfy that craving, owner Andrea Tournis-Vagenas began working on recipes and eventually ended up buying a food truck! Island Popper operated solely out of that truck for seven years until July 2019 when the business went from wheels to walls. That’s when the Kalihi shop was born!
Most popular flavors are the Tsunami Mix, Maui Mix, and the Big Island Mix. Tsunami is Island Popper’s original furikake, organic butter and kaki mochi. It’s the Maui Mix that Tournis-Vagenas describes as Chicago-style all the way made with real caramel and cheddar cheese. And finally, the Big Island Mix is furikake, caramel, and organic butter.
“We only use non-GMO kernels and everything is popped in 100 percent coconut oil. It gives it a buttery feel,” Tournis-Vagenas says. “Everything that you buy today was made today. We don’t use any preservatives, nothing was pre-packaged, waiting on the table for you.”
Special for National Popcorn Day, Island Popper is offering a special deal all week through January 23, 2021! All week, you can get a free cup of popcorn with every purchase. This week, Island Popper is also releasing a new flavor: Buffalo Ranch!
