A 73-year-old California man suffered lacerations to his calf in an apparent shark bite incident off of Kāʻanapali Beach in West Maui.

Crews responded to the call at around 7:45 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, 2021 in the area fronting the Westing Kāʻanapali Ocean Resort.

Fire officials say the man was snorkeling when the incident occurred about 40 yards offshore. The man made it to shore on his own power and was given first aid by staff at the KOR.

The man was last reported to be in good condition and was undergoing further evaluation by Medics. Ocean safety crews with Jet Ski 3 and Ladder 3 will remain on scene advising beach goers to stay out of the water.

Fire officials say the shark was estimated to be eight feet in length.

Authorities say ocean and weather conditions were calm at the time of the report.
