93rd Lei Day Celebration: Help Hawaii make the world’s largest lei
As the saying goes, May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii! HI Now host Kanoe Gibson is with guest host Raeceen Satele to contribute to the effort as Hawaii looks to unofficially reclaim the World Record for the longest fresh flower lei.
While Hawaii was the World Record holder for longest fresh flower lei in 2008, India now currently has the title. This year, you can help reclaim it! Lei Day celebrations will continue to look a little different due to the pandemic, but the theme of 2021’s celebration is “Nā Lei Koa,” or Warrior Lei. The theme was developed to show appreciation for frontline workers who continue to battle COVID-19.
In order to limit physical interactions, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation is encouraging everyone to make a lei using whatever they have and to display it in a prominent location on your property. After you display the lei, take a picture of your lovely creation, and post it to social media using the hashtag #leidaycelebration2021. And make sure to include how long it is! That way it can be added to the tally.
The goal is to virtually beat the 3.11-mile world record, and more importantly, these lei of aloha serve as a tribute to the victims of COVID-19 and their families.
So if you haven’t started, help add to the count and make those lei!
