The Effingham Flaming Hearts girls basketball team defeated the Newton Lady Eagles Friday 60-19 at the Bob Kerans Tournament.

Abby Weis and Natalie Carie each had 12 points to lead the Hearts in scoring..

“This was a good start to our season heading into conference play,” said Effingham head coach Jeff Schafer. “Natalie had a good game after early foul trouble. She really showed her maturity and bounced back.”

Skyler Schafer added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Carsyn Fearday finished with nine points, four rebounds and three assists. Miranda Fox finished with a team-high six assists.

For the Eagles, Brooke Jansen led the way with nine points, while Ali Bierman and Whitney Zumbahlen each scored four.

Windsor/Stewarson-Strasburg 72, Dieterich 65

The Hatchets of Windsor/Stewarson-Strasburg used a game-high 26 points from Megan Schlechte to help defeat the Movin’ Maroons of Dieterich 72-65.

Nikki Trussell added 19 points, while Hannah Hayes and Katrina Davis each added 12.

For the Movin’ Maroons, Jennifer Robards had 21 points, while Kaitlyn Bloemer added 12. Gracie Britton added nine, while Cassie Vahling added eight.

Boys Basketball

Dieterich 65, Newton 63

The Dieterich Movin’ Maroons used a game-high 27 points from Collin Hartke to help defeat the Newton Eagles Friday 65-63.

Evan Bohnhoff added 12, while Cole Niebrugge added 11.

For the Eagles, Justin Zumbahlen led the way with 16, while Kyle Schafer and Zak Finn each added 13. Seth Weber added nine.

Casey-Westfield 67, Altamont 55

The Altamont Indians were defeated by Casey-Westfield Friday 67-55 in the Cumberland Turkey Tournament.

The Indians had four players score in double figures. Aidan Jahraus led the way with 14, while Alek Biggs and Kaden Eirhart each added 12. Denver Duckwitz had 10.

Charleston 90, Cumberland 83

The Charleston Trojans proved to be too much for the Cumberland Pirates Friday, defeating Cumberland 90-83.

Zach Wolke scored a game-high 40 points, including going 13-of-15 at the charity stripe. Myles Gerhardt added 15 points.

WSS 55, U High 48

The Hatchets of Windsor/Stewardson Strasburg picked up a pair of wins at the Cerro Gordo Tournament Friday.

In the first game, Clay Tabbert led the way in scoring with 13 points, while Beau Bennett added 12. Wyatt Smith added nine, while Gavan Wernsing added eight.

In the second game, The Hatchets defeated Sangamon Valley 65-49. Adam Burton had a team-high 17 points while Smith added 16. Jackson miller added 10, while Tabbert and Wernsing each added eight.

St. Elmo/Brownstown 60, CHBC 53

The Bobcats of Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City were defeated by the Eagles of St. Elmo/Browntown.

The Eagles were led by Nick Rosborough who scored 17 and Jacob Baron who scored 12.

For the Bobcats, Dylan Webster scored a team-best 19 points, while Trace Smith added 16.
